Take A Stress Test

The reason why I feel that everyone should take a stress test is because, for many, stress has become a lifestyle that they feel stuck in.

And, it has become so commonplace in their lives that they can barely see the problems it is creating.

Stress impacts your life.

Quite honestly, that is the flat out truth. No matter how strong your ego is, no matter how trained you may be in thinking yourself through challenges…anyone can become a hostage of stress when it is left unmanaged.

You can’t fix something that you can’t see

There is a BEST of you that flourishes when not stressed, or when you are in balance more time throughout the day. If you are so used to living a stressful life, it becomes harder and harder to “see” how stress is impacting ALL of who you are.

It is a big deal.

The first step in us developing a stress management program that works for you is to give you an opportunity to become aware of how stress may be impacting your life:


Physically
Taking care of your physical body is like taking care of your car. If you choose to not attend to regular maintenance, keeping fuels at a functional range, keeping tires in alignment etc. you risk damaging or shortening the life of the car.

With chronic stress, you may notice getting headaches more often, not being able to sleep, or more muscle tension.

Emotionally
The emotional part of who you are is, for me, one of the most important indicators of stress that we have. I say that because it IS within your emotions that the quality of your life is experienced.

When the emotional part of you is in balance you will typically feel peaceful and calm. That can be your benchmark.

With chronic stress people often experience a sense of loss of control with their emotions.

Take a stress test to begin to just “notice”…without blame, shame, or without judgment…how stress may be impacting your life emotionally.


Spiritually
I refer to spirituality as the congruency between your actions and behaviors and who you believe you are as a person. When you are in balance, your actions and behaviors are very congruent with your personal belief system of who you are.

With chronic stress , the relationships with yourself and others will suffer.

The caveat that I always give when I’m encouraging a client to safely develop their self-awareness skills is this:

Becoming aware of something doesn’t mean you have to change anything.

When you give yourself an opportunity to become aware of how stress is impacting ALL of who you are, you are giving yourself the gift of choice.

Choice is power.

When you have choices, you have control over your life. That is what is important. Give yourself that gift.

M.S., a woman in her late forties with progressively more and more disabling rheumatoid arthritis since childhood, whose most recent problems have arisen over the last two to three years as complications of immunosuppressive therapy for her disease. The complications have been associated with the severely disabling chronic pain of recurrent herpes neuralgia for more than three years, and for the past 15 months, recurrent osteomyelitis in her right lower mandible.

The second, more alarming (even life-threatening) problem has caused months of diagnostic and therapy confusion among her many consultants, three successive resections of the bone over the last six to eight months, and the still ongoing threat of more relapses of the smoldering bone infection and chronic pain only made bearable by chronic, massive doses of opiates.

In the few months since M. began to work with Cathi with several modalities: stress management, therapeutic touch, guided imaging, and others, her life has become more livable, as she has become able to bear the pain and the discouragement of unresolved disease.

She has relied on many of the methods for maintaining hope and getting through overwhelming discouragement by using the inner resources she has learned with Cathi.

My hope as her primary physician, is that Cathi and M. will be able to continue to work together to maintain that inner strength and hope as she faces yet more months of pain, and further repeated surgery.
